Tre
Few things in life have given me the kind of joy and sorrow as my relationship with Trey. He taught me to better appreciate the simple and more important things in life. This is his story, his lessons about life and my tribute to the dog that meant so much to me.
Keep your furry chin up
In 2000, we rescued an abandoned dog named Trey. A six year old dog Golden Retriever with serious health problems was not a great candidate for adoption. This dog would take considerable time, trouble, effort and expense. However, Trey seemed to have a calm and sweet disposition and knew that we were probably his only hope. He also had gone straight to my heart and I wanted to give him the very best second half of his life possible. Trey had found his real home.
A complete medical evaluation revealed that he was quite weak, was overweight, had raw sores or “hot spots”, hair loss, suffered from malnutrition, and had cysts on his eye lids. He had eye surgery one, began giving Trey a number of vitamins and mineral supplements, began to take him for short walks, and shared our home and heart with Trey. After numerous tests and several trial and error solutions, we determined he had severe skin problems as a result of untreated allergies and a thyroid imbalance. After switching to a special low allergen dog food and finding the right level of thyroid medicine level, Trey’s beautiful golden coat filled in. Trey was receiving an enormous amount of attention, love and patience. As it turns out, he would need it. The next challenge for Trey was seizures. After experimenting with different drugs and drug levels, we were finally able to control the seizures. Shortly after, we discovered a cancerous tumor in Trey’s mouth. An immediate surgery removed the area around the tumor. We were advised that we should seriously consider removing half of his entire lower jaw to be safe. After consulting numerous experts, and most importantly, my Aunt Karen (a wise veterinarian), we decided to wait. Luckily, it ended up being the right choice. Trey’s next battle was heartworm. This was yet another potential deadly disease Trey had to fight. He won this battle as well, and each day he became stronger and more playful.
Appreciate What You Get
Trey’s remaining years with us after his first two were relatively calm. He had come a long way and fought incredible odds. Trey suffered from serious health problems, but he never let any of it get him down. Despite life's curveballs, he was a joyful, loving, faithful, courageous dog. Even with all his setbacks, Trey was full of life. He seems to cherish every moment, and appreciated all he had. He looked up with those Golden eyes, as if to say "thanks".
He loved walks, any time near water, and car rides. But most of all, he was happiest when he was just being loved.
Stay By Their Side
At home we were inseparable. He has become a constant companion, never wanting to be left behind. Trey’s ability to love unconditionally endeared
him to our hearts as little else can. Trey thanked us for being his family with 100% unconditional love, loyalty and devotion. To Trey, I was the center of his universe, the focus of his love, faith and trust. I gave Trey all the time and love I could spare. In return, he gave me his all.
Conclusion
In 2007, Trey’s health began to deteriorate quite a bit. He was no longer happy and playful and had lost almost all of his sight and hearing. Trey spent almost his entire day sleeping and was mostly unaware of his surroundings. Then abruptly one weekend he developed a debilitating hip dysphasia. Unable to stand, we knew what had to be done. However, no decision was more difficult. We lost a member of our family. Trey was such a wonderful gift - a loyal, loving, furry-faced friend. He was so much more than just a pet; he was a companion and friend. Trey is no longer waiting at the door, wagging his tail, to welcome us home or to watch us with sad eyes when we leave. However, he will forever be in our hearts.
